Home Schooling Verse Normal Schooling System
The article we have chosen to write about Homeschooling being an Art and not a science. The research was conducted to support a hypothesis about home scholars and college choices specifically how children who are schooled at home are less likely to major in sciences than children taught in normal school setting are. The article that was written by Phillip Lyn aimed at explains the significance of normal schooling when it comes to choices of college.
Philip chooses to survey about five hundred students at Midwestern College of which one-third of the College’s population includes homeschooled teenagers at the high school level. The methodology used a survey that included about fifty questions on different topics. The result of the survey concluded that about 9% of the homeschooled students choose a major in the natural sciences while 20% of the normal schooling system majored in natural sciences. There have been many studied on the effects of schooling at home, but very few scholars have investigated the possible relationship between a student’s choice of major and home school education (Mayberry,2005). That leads me to accept that this study is a recent research.
The article discusses college choice and home schooling, which are both agents of interaction. As an agent of interaction, home scholars are, usually, taught in their home by their parents. That is very different environment when compared to the normal schooling system because it hinders the students from interacting with many people from different backgrounds. The school system provides the students with an environment that contribute to improving their feelings about science classes. The article gave several reasons as to why homeschooled students had a negative feeling towards science subjects. The students felt that they were not adequately prepared to take more advanced science classes in college because most of the home scholar’s parents are not science teachers. That reason made students feel as if they did not fully understand the principles of science. (Philip, & Herrick,2011)
The author’s goal is to explain that home schooling has an effect on the choices college students made on neutral sciences.
What question remains unanswered?
The research states that the reason college students did not major in neutral sciences is that their parents were not science professional teachers. If the parents of home scholars were science profession, would it make home scholars have the courage to major in sciences?
If I had to design an experiment to this hypothesis, what would I do?
I would research why home schooling affects the choices of college students in advanced sciences. I would use the information that is already found to do more research of more reasons why home scholars did not prefer majoring in sciences.
What are the independent, dependent and control variables?
The independent variable here is home schooling. The dependent variable is the student. The control variable is the choices of the scholars.
My research question is whether home schooling has an effect on the choices students make on majoring in sciences.
My hypothesis is that most homes schooled children do not major in sciences as compared to children who go through the normal schooling system.
